Upcoming city meetings - Please comment!

Updated: May 27, 2024

Dear Friends of UC,

The multi-year University Community Plan Update process is drawing to a close, but there is still time to make your voice heard. Here are some important dates coming up. Mark your calendars and speak up if you can!

1. This Tuesday, May 14 at 6:00 p.m. the University Community Planning Group (UCPG) will be discussing their final comments on the UC Plan Update and the Draft Program Environmental Impact Report. The in-person meeting will be at 9880 Campus Point Dr., 3rd floor, or you can attend virtually via this link. We encourage you to comment on the Plan Update. Some suggested comments and a link to our comment letter are at the bottom of this email. Here is the meeting agenda.

2. This Thursday, May 16 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. the City of San Diego Parks Committee will be evaluating the UC Plan Update. You can attend in person at the Balboa Park Club Ballroom at 2135 Pan American Way, San Diego, CA 92101, or click here for the link and password to attend virtually. If you can, please speak up and object to the UC Plan Update on the basis that it proposes to dramatically increase the population of the community while providing almost no new park space, and that the EIR incorporates little protection for open spaces used by the public (such as Rose Canyon). Here is the meeting agenda. Please note that the UC Plan is one of the later items on the agenda.

3. On Thursday, May 30, the City of San Diego Planning Commission will be asked to recommend approval, conditional approval, or denial of the UC Plan Update. We will provide more information about that meeting before May 30.

4. The Land Use and Housing committee is expected to meet June 13 on this topic, and City Council could meet soon afterwards (likely in July) for the final vote. We will keep you posted and will be sending more information about how to reach out to your City councilmembers.

Suggested comments for the May 14 UCPG meeting

We encourage you to provide your opinion if there is an opportunity to comment. If you want to review Help Save UC’s written comments on the Plan Update, click here. If you agree with our comments, you may wish to use some of these points:

  • I oppose the Plan Update as proposed.

  • Allocating more than one third of the housing needed for the City of San Diego in the University Community is wrong.

  • The overall density proposed in the Plan Update should be reduced.

  • The Plan Update does not provide enough park space or guaranteed upgrades to transportation and emergency services needed to support the proposed densities.

  • The height limits for the shopping centers on Governor Drive should be 40 feet for the Sprouts Center and 50 feet for the Vons center, not 100 feet.

  • The densities for those shopping centers should be reduced, and setbacks for these properties should be 30 feet from adjacent properties.

  • The Plan Update should be set aside until the City of San Diego completes an Environmental Impact Review that fully evaluates the impacts of this proposed growth – the Draft EIR does not complete this analysis.

Thank you to the UC Community for your continued help in this fight.

Sincerely,

Help Save UC
